By Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly seeking new leads for the second season of their acclaimed TV series reimagining of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”.
Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the first season starred Glover and Maya Erskine as a married couple who both begin new careers as spies, taking on new aliases, John and Jane Smith.
The first season finale saw John and Jane getting into a gunfight, leaving it unclear if one, or both, would survive. All those involved have deflected questions whether Glover or Erskine will be back, Sloane saying: “If we tell you too much, you’ll know early if they survived.”
The roles are one-year deals for two twentysomething actors and are described as leads, but these are new characters – not replacements – so Glover and Erskine could conceivably reprise their roles.
The show’s setup also has multiple Johns and Janes in play which can add to the confusion. Several names have been rumored so far, including musician Billie Eilish, but no deals are set as yet.
The series was submitted as a drama, not an anthology series at the Emmys, suggesting the continuity will continue.
