As we know, filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s next film is set for a July 2026 release via Universal Pictures with filming to kick off early next year.
Matt Damon is reportedly in talks to star and a script that Nolan and his regular producing partner Emma Thomas co-wrote is done. But what is it?
The topic and genre of the film are under wraps, but that hasn’t stopped rumors swirling. One rumor of it being a horror film has been effectively shot down by multiple sources.
A more interesting one was that he was planning a film reimagining of iconic 1960s British mystery TV series “The Prisoner”. THR seemingly debunked it, but then later reportedly clarified they didn’t know if it was true or not.
The casting of Damon for the role of Number Six could potentially fit – “The Prisoner” was seen as a subversion of star Patrick McGoohan’s earlier spy series “Danger Man” and thus a new “The Prisoner” could serve as a subversion of Damon’s Bourne films.
However a new one has emerged in the last few days via Reddit and has gained some traction. That story is that Nolan and his team have been in touch with the NYPD Aviation Unit about shooting a New York-based futuristic action film about a helicopter pilot cop who heads up the Aviation Unit.
The story would revolve around an advanced helicopter prototype which is being pursued by terrorists. It’s claimed that Nolan, rather than circulating a screenplay to the crew at present, is making sure they get high-quality copies of the Roy Scheider-led and John Badham-directed 1983 action film “Blue Thunder”.
World of Reel adds that the film is NOT a “Blue Thunder” remake, but is inspired by it and Nolan is a fan of the film. Whatever the film is, more details on the new project are expected out before the end of the year.
