Last month came the news that Charlie Hunnam had scored the lead role of notorious serial killer Ed Gein in the third season of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series at Netflix.
The Wisconsin-born Gein was infamous in 1957 after authorities discovered not only had he killed multiple people, he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned clothing and household items from the remains.
The infamous case directly inspired several onscreen serial killer characters including Norman Bates in “Psycho” and Leatherface in “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”.
Turns out that “Psycho” inspiration is going to be made manifest in the new season as further casting announced today has revealed that veteran British actor Tom Hollander (“The Night Manager,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”) has been cast as filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in the series.
Hollander recently worked Murphy on “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” and joins two further announced additions today – “The Conners” alum Laurie Metcalf as Ed Gein’s mother and longtime British actress Olivia Williams (“The Crown”) as Hitchcock’s wife and editor Alma Reville.
The first season of “Monster” focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer with Evan Peters taking on the role. The recent second season focuses on the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents.
