Sony opened “Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire” back in March to a decidedly softer reception than its ‘Afterlife’ predecessor.
The sequel, which marked the fourth film in the same continuity as the original franchise and the fifth “Ghostbusters” film overall, ended up grossing $201 million worldwide from a $100 million budget.
Gil Kenan wrote ‘Afterlife’ and both wrote and directed ‘Frozen Empire,’ so he’s keenly up on how the franchise is going. Out promoting Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” on which he’s a producer, Kenan was asked for an update on the future of the “Ghostbusters” franchise.
He tells The Direct that active discussions are underway for more big screen stories with the franchise:
“The answer is yes, Jason [Reitman]… we take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of ‘Ghostbusters’ very seriously… we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big ‘Ghostbuster’ stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more. There’ll be more about that later.”
Kenan also discussed the animated “Ghostbusters” series on Netflix that he and Reiman are overseeing:
“I’ve spoken recently about the fact that we are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix. That is something that I’m actively involved with, Jason on a day-to-day basis right now, we are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”
This begs the obvious question as to whether the next film will lean away from the nostalgic angles of the last two for a clean ‘soft launch’ (ala “Jurassic World”) with new characters, locations, and circumstances. For that, it’s a wait and see.
