Filmmaker Chris Sanders has confirmed that a sequel to the highly acclaimed animated feature “The Wild Robot” is currently in development at DreamWorks Animation.
Speaking with Deadline, he says: “100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one.” Sanders directed the animated feature from a screenplay he also penned.
The confirmation comes as it has been revealed the first film is heading to digital – fast.
Even with the major box-office success of the title, which will take second place at the domestic box office in its third weekend of release, distributor Universal Pictures has decided to bring it home quick.
To that end, the title will be launched on PVOD platforms like Apple and Amazon this coming Tuesday, October 15th – just 18 days since its theatrical launch according to When to Stream.
Universal and Dreamworks’ “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” famously made two-thirds of its theatrical box-office revenue after it was released on PVOD.
Kids animated films in particular have demonstrated in the past that they are seemingly unaffected by PVOD releases with no appreciably sharper drop-offs once titles become available on digital.
