The critically acclaimed Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden-led Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses” finished its fourth season run this week with a more personal season than most.
Each of the six episode series adapts one of author Mick Herron’s “Slough Hose” novels with eight published so far along with three short stories. A ninth novel is coming out next year.
As a result, the show has plenty of material to work with if Apple is to continue greenlighting it and a fifth season is in production so that is certainly coming, but what about beyond that?
Showrunner Will Smith spoke with Collider this week and says work on the fifth season is nearly complete:
“We’ve nearly done Season 5. We’ve got a couple of days to finish off on it, but we’re already into the edit, so it’s coming. Don’t worry, it’s coming. Not as quick as you want, but it’s coming.”
He says Herron is delighted with the show’s success and heavily involved in the show’s creativity, checking with the writers at multiple points throughout the seasons, giving his take on any changes made to the books, visiting the set and watching the edits.
The show’s seasons have remained a steadfastly six episodes per season and rarely go beyond the 45 minute mark except for premieres/finales (and even then only a few minutes). He confirms the plan is to continue that approach with any future seasons. So what of a sixth season, where do things stand right now with Apple:
“I really can’t say anything about Season 6. All I can say is Season 5 is coming and everyone’s very, very happy with it. So, hopefully, the trajectory will continue, and the audience will continue to grow, and the audience will continue to like what we’re doing. Gary seems happy. He keeps saying to just go forever. It’s Gary and Mick. If they’re still there, it’ll keep happening.”
He also says if there’s time taken to deliver another season, there’s a “wealth of ancillary material to explore and to drop in” including the novellas.
The fourth season of “Slow Horses” is now available to stream in full on the Apple TV+ service.
