Ncuti Gatwa has already shot his second season of “Doctor Who” to air next year, and a spin-off mini-series event is currently in production.
But will Gatwa get a third season? It’s no secret linear ratings for the series haven’t been great and Disney has played coy as to how its going on its streaming service.
Showrunner Russell T. Davies has indicated in the past the series is pulling in younger audiences in a way not really seen with the last few doctors. Still, a big question has lingered over the show’s fate and whether it’ll be renewed.
Things have now taken a twist. The Radio Times have reported that Ncuti Gatwa announced during a “The Graham Norton Show” appearance that he would be filming his third season of “Doctor Who” in 2025.
He reportedly said: “It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”
However, when the episode aired on Friday night, that bit where Gatwa mentioned he would be filming season three in 2025 was cut. The BBC owns the Graham Norton show so it’s being seen as a network decision to cut that. Why?
The BBC and Disney have yet to announce a third season and until they do it doesn’t exist officially per se – even if filming plans are already being made.
The chatter comes as Davies tells Doctor Who Magazine the spin-off event series “The War Between the Land and the Sea” will run “until just before Christmas”. Davies penned Episodes 1 & 5, Pete Tighe penned Episodes 2 & 3 and both co-wrote episode 5.
Dylan Holmes Williams will direct the entire run which is shooting as ‘one big block’ as opposed to several blocks like a typical “Doctor Who” season. Davies also teases that both the first and last scene of the entire series are expected to have special appearances.
Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, Ruth Madeley, Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Vincent Franklin, Francesca Corney and Mei Mac star in the series about the re-emergence of the Sea Devils and UNIT waging war against them.
