This has been a wait but looks to be a solid release.

iam8bit is thrilled to announce that it’s bringing a legendary soundtrack from the PlayStation 1 archives to Western audiences. Just as Ghost in the Shell pioneered anime in the mid-1990s, the soundtrack from its game adaptation Ghost in the Shell Megatech Body included cutting-edge collaborations with musicians who would define the growing techno scene. The soundtrack – available on 2 CDs, 2 LPs, and picture disc formats – includes more than 20 influential tracks and is available for pre-order on iam8bit.com.

Ghost in the Shell was a revelation when it was released on home video in 1996. Its blend of neo-noir storytelling, high-quality animation, and graphic violence was a stark departure from what many Western viewers thought so-called cartoons were capable of delivering. In 1997, Sony Interactive Entertainment released its Ghost in the Shell game, which included the Western voice cast – and an explosive soundtrack featuring a who’s who of influential techno artists.

Contemporary players may not be familiar with the game itself, but the Ghost in the Shell Megatech Body soundtrack remains an incredible piece of techno history, introducing listeners to a host of foundational artists within the genre. This soundtrack, imported from Japan, features tracks from artists including Takkyu Ishino, Derrick May, Mijk Van Dijk, Joey Beltramm, and many more.

The CD ($42.99) packs 23 warehouse-shaking bangers into a stunning 3D lenticular case and includes extensive liner notes including a timeline summarizing the history of collaborations between techno, anime, and gaming culture from 1980 to 2024. The 2xLP ($54.99) includes 11 incredible tracks pressed on high-quality vinyl with a jacket that highlights stunning Yamato-e illustrations from artist Takashi Murakami. Finally, the six-track 12″ picture disc ($49.99) features carefully curated cuts from the game’s soundtrack, collected on a gorgeously illustrated two-sided disc that replicates the original release faithfully.

Ghost in the Shell Megatech Body is available for pre-order now on iam8bit.com and is expected to ship Q2 2025.
