Over the years, former “The Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien has found his name rumored for a number of superhero roles.
Film and comic book fan sites over the years have posted stories with his name coming up for casting consideration for a number of roles including Spider-Man back in 2015 before Tom Holland was cast, and as a potential replacement for Ezra Miller in “The Flash” film.
Turns out there’s never been any truth to any of it. Out promoting his role as a young Dan Aykroyd in Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” film, he was asked by Men’s Health if any of those superhero film reports had any truth.
He responded: “No, never”. Then asked “Nothing?” to which he responded: “No, none of it.” Asked if there would be any interest if an opportunity ever came up and if he was a comic book fan, he said:
“I never have been. But I wouldn’t rule out anything. Certainly, it’s not of interest to me as of now. Maybe when I was 20 and they were rebooting Spider-Man – I was excited about that.
But I didn’t even get past the casting pre-call or anything. No, none of those rumors have ever been true. I didn’t even know there were rumors. I just thought they were people just putting it out there. None of anything I’ve ever read about myself is true. So, if you want to use that template, that’s my experience.”
O’Brien famously was severely injured in a stunt gone wrong on the set of the final “The Maze Runner” film – leaving him with a concussion, a facial fracture and other brain trauma.
He indicates in the new interview his safety concerns on the set were not listened to or respected. After that, he approaches everything differently, “particularly with regards to standing my ground on set.”
