The upcoming first of two “Wicked” musical films clocks in at around 2 hours 40 minutes, but don’t expect that to be all singing.

Universal Pictures has released details of the official soundtrack for the movie which confirms that the film’s music is following the first act of the stage play exactly.

This means eleven songs will be sung in order in the film starting with “No One Mourns the Wicked” and ending with the entire musical’s most famous number – “Defying Gravity”.

However the film runs almost the length of the entire musical so of that 160 minutes, it works out to only around 40 minutes of it will involve songs.

The second film will involve ten songs which are even shorter, the music in that film likely to come in around the half hour mark unless new songs are added to the mix.

Compare that to other famed musicals – “Chicago” had 17 songs over 113 minutes, “Dreamgirls” had around 32 songs over 130 minutes, Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd” boasted around 18-20 songs which took up 70 minutes of its 116 minute runtime.

In fact, the closest comparable proportion of song to film is, of all movies, “Joker: Folie à Deux” which had around 40 minutes of music from Phoenix & Gaga in a 131-minute film.

“Wicked” opens in cinemas November 22nd.
