Aaron Pierre, coming off rave reviews for his work on the Netflix film “Rebel Ridge” which topped the Netflix charts for three weeks in a row, has scored the key role of Green Lantern John Stewart in DC Studios and HBO’s “Lanterns” series.
An intense casting process came down to Pierre and Stephan James, both participating in screen tests last week alongside the already-cast Kyle Chandler. Though both had supporters, the final decision was made yesterday.
The fan-favorite comic book character was one of DC’s first Black superheroes and the version portrayed in the 2000s animated “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited” series brought in a lot of fans to the franchise.
Boasting a gritty “True Detective” vibe, the series follows Hal Jordan (Chandler), a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns. He is reluctantly mentoring Stewart (Pierre), a younger Green Lantern.
The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The series marks the first major TV endeavor from DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
James Hawes (“Slow Horses”) will helm the first two episodes of an eight episode run. Chris Mundy (“Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are executive producing and writing, with Mundy showrunning.
Pierre was previously cast opposite Mahershala Ali in Marvel Studios’ “Blade” but the version he was in was re-written and so he’s no longer involved.
