Filmmaker Joe Dante has revealed that he’s surprised that his 1989 dark comedy “The ‘Burbs” is getting a TV series remake.

The project received a straight-to-series order at Peacock last month and is said to boast a comedic mystery tone. Brian Grazer, who produced the original film, and Seth MacFarlane are among the show’s executive producers.

Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher starred in the original that unfolds in a picturesque suburban neighborhood cul-de-sac where some kooky new neighbours move in and they become convinced the family is hiding a spooky secret.

Keke Palmer will star in the new series as half of a young married couple who return to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light.

Dante, speaking to THR to promote the second season of Max animated series “Gremlins: The Wild Batch,” was asked how he feels about the remake and his social media response to the news a few weeks back which suggested they hadn’t spoken to him. He reportedly laughed and said:

“I think my actual comment was, ‘How are they going to make a whole TV series out of that story?’ As opposed to, ‘I want to be the one to do it.’ Good luck to them. It’s kind a one-off story. [Still], it’s always nice when things have a shelf life.”

Dante also confirmed that he has not been contacted by the series’ team about being involved. In the same discussion, he also spoke about the chances for a third Gremlins movie:

“That’s up to the audience. The fact is that it’s too big a property for somebody not to make something. But it’s been difficult for people to wrap their heads around, ‘Exactly how are we going to do this?’ This series is a brilliant answer to that problem because it’s a prequel, and it’s animated, and it’s the perfect next step in the Gremlins saga.”

Dante helmed both “Gremlins” films in 1984 and 1990 respectively along with films like “Innerspace,” “The Howling,” “Small Soldiers,” “The Hole” and “Looney Tunes: Back in Action”.
