Joel Kinnaman wants to make it quite clear he will not reprise his “Suicide Squad” role of Rick Flag Jr. in HBO’s “Peacemaker” series.
Kinnaman first played the role in David Ayers’ “Suicide Squad” in 2016 and then reprised his role in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” in 2021 where his character was killed off.
His character’s father Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) will be a player in the early works of Gunn’s new DC Universe and has a major role in the second season of “Peacemaker”.
Then there was a social media post earlier this year celebrating the series by a crew member which tagged Kinnaman – a post that was quickly deleted.
Naturally there’s speculation the actor will make a cameo, but he tells Screen Rant there are no such plans: “I don’t know what to say. That’s ridiculous. I would never. I would never be on a show like that. It’s not what I do. It’s not what I do.”
This has already led to speculation that Kinnaman may be protesting too much with his response. The actor has jumped between film and TV frequently and has certainly appeared in series far less well-received than “Peacemaker” which scored very good reviews overall (and better ones than either “Suicide Squad” film).
The second season of “Peacemaker” is expected to release in the back half of 2025 on HBO.
