Legendary game creator/developer Hideo Kojima says multiple film studios were pursuing the live-action movie adaptation of his video game “Death Stranding” before he settled on A24 as its home.
Kojima recently sat down with “Civil War” director Alex Garland for a joint interview with Famitsu and the pair talked about Garland’s film which was distributed by A24.
When that came up, the topic turned towards Kojima working with A24 on “Death Stranding” and the famed game designer said other studios suggested ideas with many dubbing it a big-budget, “exploding in a flashy way” style film.
However, that didn’t jibe with Kojima’s style: “I don’t like that. I would like to make a slightly different movie with A24.” He re-affirms that he won’t direct the film but is involved as a producer and a hands-on on at that.
The 2019 game is set in a world after the eponymous cataclysmic event which led to destructive and nightmarish supernatural creatures roaming the Earth and society left devastated and on the brink of collapse.
Players take on the role of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network. Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Lindsay Wagner, and filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro all lent their voices and likenesses to the game.
Kojima is working on the “Death Stranding 2: On The Beach” game which is currently slated for release next year. He also has action espionage title “Physint” in development which he says will be “both a game and a movie at the same time.”
