James Cameron, the director of “Avatar” and “The Terminator,” has joined the board of directors of Stability AI.
The major artificial intelligence company is the one that developed the text-to-image and text-to-video generative AI model Stable Diffusion which is being heavily eyed by the visual effects industry as a potential tool.
He joins WETA Digital CEO Prem Akkaraju who also serves as CEO of Stability AI, and Napster founder Sean Parker as executive chairman.
Cameron says in a statement:
“I’ve spent my career seeking out emerging technologies that push the very boundaries of what’s possible, all in the service of telling incredible stories. I was at the forefront of CGI over three decades ago, and I’ve stayed on the cutting edge since.
Now, the intersection of generative AI and CGI image creation is the next wave. The convergence of these two totally different engines of creation will unlock new ways for artists to tell stories in ways we could have never imagined.
Stability AI is poised to lead this transformation. I’m delighted to collaborate with Sean, Prem, and the Stability AI team as they shape the future of all visual media.”
Akkaraju says the company’s mission is to transform visual media for the next century with a “full stack AI pipeline” available to creators to bring their ideas to life.
The news comes as Warner Bros. Discovery has partnered with Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform to use Caption AI, a tool to create captions for its content platforms.
The tool will first be used on unscripted programming to cut time and production costs around creating captions for sports and reality TV content.
They add that real people will still oversee the use of Caption AI for quality assurance on studio channels like Max, CNN and Discovery+. Ultimately the goal will be to cut the time required to create captions by 80% and production costs of making said captions by around 50%.
