The surprise dark twist in the final minutes of the “Matlock” reboot on CBS got plenty of eyeballs it seems.
The numbers are in for Oscar-winning veteran Kathy Bates’ return to broadcast TV with the series pulling in viewership rarely seen on network TV anymore.
The reimagining of the series averaged 7.73 million viewers on Sunday in time-adjusted Live+Same Day Nielsen ratings. That’s the largest audience for a non-post-Super Bowl series premiere since April 2019.
It also didn’t benefit from a football bump as the series premiered after “60 Minutes,” and actually saw a jump of one million viewers above that news show’s numbers.
The series is also pulling in good reviews with 100% (7.8/10) from a handful of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73/100 on Metacritic, whilst reaction to the twist has been highly positive so far on social media.
The first episode of “Matlock” is currently streaming on Paramount+ with encore broadcasts scheduled October 8 and October 10th ahead of the second episode kicking off on Thursday 9pm on October 17th.
