James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe initiative is about to get underway with a launch of “Creature Commandos,” an animated series that will introduce characters that could eventually make their way to live action.
The series follows a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. The voice cast includes the likes of Indira Varma, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Maria Bakalova, Sean Gunn, Zoe Chao, Anya Chalotra, Steve Agee and Viola Davis.
Veteran DC executive producer Dean Lorey, who has worked on Max’s other animated shows “Harley Quinn” and “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” is involved in the series and recently sat down with Comicbook.com to tease what we can expect.
He says one big difference between the new show and those other ones he’s been involved in, relates to the writing with Gunn himself handling all of the show’s scripts ahead of time:
“It was great, and it was really different in the sense that James Gunn had written all of the scripts before we started shooting. Usually, I’m one of the writers on a show, even if I’m running it. But James had fully written the scripts. They were great scripts. Everybody was really, really excited about them.
Gunn has previously promised that works within the new DCU will not progress into production until they have scripts locked – doing so avoids various risks, and potential budgetary blowouts. It also changes the nature of some shows like this, as Lorey explains:
So the process went into production quicker than normal, because there were scripts that were ready to go. And we were really lucky to get voice cast that [we have]. I think the Harley voice cast is great, and Kite Man, and I think the Creature Commandos voice cast is easily the equal of those.
It just was a pure pleasure to be working with James, who had such a very clear vision of what he wanted the show to be. He really knows that world. He knows it backwards and forwards. So just in terms of making the show, it’s been a pleasure, and everybody has been great to work with. I think it’s going to be a significant release. I don’t know if people really know what they’re in for yet, but it’s fantastic. We’re so proud of it.”
Lorey was also asked who his favorite character was out of the new show’s line-up, to which he said his heart with Sean Gunn’s G.I. Robot with the character having a “beautiful humanity”.
“Creature Commandos” will premiere exclusively on Max on Thursday, December 5th.
