The bio-exorcist beat the Autobots at the box-office this weekend in what turned out to be an unexpectedly tight race.
Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” retained the crown at the domestic box-office in its third weekend, taking in a further $26 million to bring its total up to $225 million domestically and $329.7 million worldwide.
The $75 million-budgeted animated “Transformers One,” riding on strong critical reviews and a great ‘A’ CinemaScore in audience exit polls, came in considerably below expectations with a $25 million domestic debut in second place.
Overseas, it similarly had a lackluster $14 million start. The hope now is that the film will have potential legs, though it shortly will face competition from “The Wild Robot” which has received universally stellar early reviews so far and taken in $6.8 million in a few markets this weekend.
Also debuting this weekend was “Crawl” director Alexandre Aja’s Halle Berry-led survival thriller “Never Let Go” which came in fourth with an underwhelming $4.5 million along with mixed reviews and a C+ CinemaScore.
That continues a disastrous run for Lionsgate following debuts of “The Killer’s Game” with $2.6M, “The Crow” reboot with $4.6M and the costly “Borderlands” with $8.6M.
The Demi Moore-led body-horror satire “The Substance” opened in sixth place with $3.1 million, the title earning the actress some of the best reviews of her career.
The “Speak No Evil” remake slid to No. 3 with $5.9 million, down just 48% from its opening which is solid for the genre. The film now stands at $21.5 million domestically and as much again overseas.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” rounded out the top five with a further $3.8 million in its ninth weekend of release. The title, which sits at $627 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally, is expected to come to digital in just over a week.
