The real Erik Menendez has issued a statement explaining how unhappy hs is with Ryan Murphy’s new true-crime anthology series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”.
The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez and are serving consecutive life sentences in jail without the possibility of parole.
The case and trial became a media sensation in 1993 as the brothers claimed they shot their parents after suffering years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father and with the knowledge of their mother.
Even before the show premiered, there had been controversy about its exploitative nature along with concern over the portrayal of the brothers’ relationship.
Erik has shared a statement responding to the series, which his wife Tammi Menendez posted on social media on Thursday night. In the statement, he slams the series for “lies and ruinous character portrayals” and “caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show”. He adds:
“It is with a heavy heart that I say, I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent… Murphy shapes his horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me and disheartening slander. Is the truth not enough? Let the truth stand as the truth. How demoralizing is it to know that one man with power can undermine decades of progress in shedding light on childhood trauma.”
Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch portray Lyle and Erik Menendez, respectively, in the series with Javier Bardem playing their father José, Chloë Sevigny as their mother Kitty, Nathan Lane as Dominick Dunne and Ari Graynor as Leslie Abramson. The nine-episode series released on the streamer on Thursday.
