Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins Entertainment are teaming to produce an entire slate of hip hop biopics about iconic artists in the genre.
The first of these will be about the rise of Queen Latifah with the singer/actress herself producing along with fellow singer/actor Will Smith and the likes of Shakim Compere, Charlie Mack, Jesse Collins, Miguel Melendez and Dionne Harmon.
The slate is set to be independently financed by Harbourview Equity Partners, which also will provide a portfolio of over seventy music catalogues spanning thousands of titles across multiple eras and artists.
Latifah says in a statement: “Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding, but are able to tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives.”
Smith says: “When you bring talented people and teams together, you can create something truly special… There’s no better story to start with than the one of Queen Latifah, an undisputed legend who has both entertained and inspired us for so many years.”
Additional details about both the Queen Latifah film and other projects on the slate will be announced soon.
