HBO and Max have revealed a first official look at Mark Strong in the upcoming “The Penguin” series in a photo posted online.

Strong steps into the role of Carmine ‘The Roman’ Falcone, a role previously played by John Turturro in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” film. In Batman lore, and the film, the character is the biggest mob boss in Gotham City.

That character’s death at the end of the film instigates the events of the spin-off series as a turf war breaks out for control between several characters including Colin Farrel’s Oz ‘The Penguin’ Cobb along with Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), and Falcone rival Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown).

Though they’re nearly the same age, Strong appears to be playing a younger version of Falcone for potential flashbacks in the eight-episode series which begins days after the events of the film with parts of Gotham City still somewhat flooded.

Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, Theo Rossi, and David H. Holmes co-star in the series.

Craig Zobel (“Mare of Easttown”) directs the first two episodes and executive produces. Lauren LeFranc is penning the series and serves as showrunner. The show launches this Thursday with subsequent episodes airing Sundays from September 29th.

The most powerful family in Gotham will gather this week to honor the recently passed Carmine Falcone.
