The original creator of 2013’s “Flappy Bird” mobile game has confirmed he’s not involved in the upcoming remake.
Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen created the original side-scroller where the player controls a bird, Faby, who must fly between columns of green pipes without hitting them.
Launched in May 2013, it found a surge of popularity in January 2014 and was pulled from the store a month later with Nguyen claiming that he felt guilty over what he considered to be the game’s addictive nature and overuse.
The game has been unavailable in its original form for over a decade, until the other week came news via X that a group called the Flappy Bird Foundation had acquired the official Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings – the latter having registered it after Nguyen failed to renew it according to Yahoo.
VGC adds that Flappy Bird Foundation is being led by designer Michael Roberts, the head of cryptocurrency firm 1208 Productions which describes themselves as ‘pioneering Web3’.
Speaking on X, Nguyen said: “No, I have no [relation] with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.”
In the wake of that posting, the original X post for the game’s re-release has been updated with a reader context warning.
The new “Flappy Bird” will release on iOS and Android in 2025.
