Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King novella adaptation “The Life of Chuck” has won the top prize of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s just finished Toronto Film Festival.
The Tom Hiddleston-led film had its world premiere at the fest this weekend and currently doesn’t have a distributor – so it’s not clear if it will be out in time for the 2024 awards-season race.
“Emilia Pérez” and “Anora,” both of which hit big at Cannes, were runners up. The Documentary Award went to “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal” while the Midnight Madness winner was “The Substance”.
Prior winners of the TIFF People’s Choice Award that went on to win the Oscar include “Nomadland,” “Green Book,” “12 Years a Slave,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “American Beauty”.
Others like “American Fiction,” “The Fabelmans,” “Belfast,” “JoJo Rabbit,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri,” “Room,” “La La Land,” “The Imitation Game” and “Silver Linings Playbook” all scored Best Film Oscar nominations.
So it’s expected ‘Chuck’ will pretty quickly lock in a distributor in the wake of this success.
