The entire staff of game developer Annapurna Interactive has reportedly resigned after failing to convince Annapurna owner Megan Ellison to let them spin off the games division into a new company according to Bloomberg, IGN and The Verge
Former president Nathan Gary, Annapurna Interactive executives, and ‘around two dozen’ staffers have quit according to the reports. An Annapurna spokesperson tells Bloomberg that existing games and projects will remain under the company.
The exodus follows in the wake of news last week about Gary and fellow Annapurna Interactive’s co-heads Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella leaving as THR reported that Annapurna was planning to “integrate its in-house gaming operations with the rest of Annapurna’s divisions – film, TV and theater.”
Annapurna Interactive was founded in 2016 and in its time has published a large amount of acclaimed titles from various independent developers including “Stray,” “Outer Wilds,” “What Remains of Edith Finch,” “Cocoon,” “Kentucky Route Zero,” “Neon White,” “Telling Lies,” “Donut County,” “Gone Home,” “Sayonara Wild Hearts,” “Ashen,” “Florence,” “Twelve Minutes,” “I Am Dead,” “If Found…,” “Gorogoa,” “Wattam,” “Solar Ash,” “Mundaun,” “A Memoir Blue,” “The Artful Escape” and “The Pathless”.
The news comes as Annapurna is getting into game-to-screen adaptations with an animated movie based on “Stray” being developed at its in-house animation division, while they recently were announced as partnering with Remedy Entertainment on potential film and TV adaptations of “Alan Wake” and “Control”.
Game wise they are currently developing “Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth” themselves.
