Matt Reeves has reassured everyone that his plans for the Robert Pattinson-led “The Batman” universe is still being envisioned as a film trilogy.
Speaking with Collider while promoting the spin-off TV series “The Penguin,” Reeves says the upcoming series and the film sequel “The Batman Part II” are all part of his vision.
Of the trilogy, he says: “Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.” He adds that “things kind of shifted” a bit when they came up with the idea to do “The Penguin” but otherwise they’re on track with the original plan.
He adds that he always intended to continue Penguin’s story in some way, saying the character was deliberately introduced as “a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure” so as to show his journey into becoming a crime kingpin.
By having the series, it allows them to flesh out the Penguin character and move his storyline further along than had they just had the films:
“It’s still the same kind of trajectory of story, but the entry point for where Oz is… further along as we enter that story than he would have been if we had started that story in the movie instead of by doing a series.”
Reeves says “The Penguin” serves as an ‘entry point’ to “The Batman Part II,” saying the film is connected to where things are left in the series. He adds that the show’s story, which begins a week after the events of the first film, plays out over the span of just a few weeks.
“The Penguin” premieres next week. Filming on “The Batman Part II” begins next year.
