Eli Roth’s costly film adaption of the video game “Borderlands” has wrapped its theatrical run, closing out with a very tepid $31 million worldwide box-office haul.
The widely panned film, shot back in mid-2021, cost anywhere between $110-120 million to produce. In addition, distributor Lionsgate spent a further $30 million on print and advertising for the film.
Forbes previous indicated that a good chunk of its budget, as much as 60%, was covered by international pre-sales. However the Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis-led film is still likely to lose tens of millions for the studio.
In terms of game-to-film adaptations, even some other notable flops earned considerably more at the box-office including “Doom” ($59m), “Max Payne” ($88m), “Hitman” & “Street Fighter” ($99m) and “Need for Speed” ($194m).
It’s well behind some of the bigger grosses of the genre such as “Warcraft” ($439m), the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films ($320m & $405m), “Uncharted” ($401m), “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ($336m), “Five Nights at Freddy’s” ($297m) and “Assassin’s Creed” ($241m).
One game-to-film it did manage to beat? “Wing Commander” which pulled in just $11.5 million worldwide from its theatrical run.
