“Green Room” and “Blue Ruin” director Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” has topped the Netflix film charts in its first week of release.
The title came in at #1 both in the United States and globally for the week of September 2nd-8th with 31.2 million views worldwide. To put that in comparison, the biggest Netflix film debut week of recent times was “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” at 41 million views.
‘Rebel’ is in line with other recent debuts like Wahlberg-Berry action film “The Union” (33m) and Kidman-Efron comedy “A Family Affair” (31.9m). All three of those other mentioned films however had splashier ad campaigns and more ‘star power’.
“Rebel Ridge” is flying high mostly on the rave reviews for the project with the film sitting at 94% (7.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” as the best-reviewed films on the service this year.
It’s also a return to form for Saulnier whose 2013 film “Blue Ruin” and 2015 film “Green Room” landed very similar high scores, but his first film for Netflix with 2018’s “Hold the Dark” landed mixed/negative reviews.
“Rebel Ridge” also hit controversy during its making in 2021 when the originally cast John Boyega abruptly left the production midway through the shoot. Aaron Pierre took over the role and has subsequently earned raves for his performance.
In the film, he plays a former Marine who grapples his way through a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief (Don Johnson). He didn’t start this fight, but he will finish it.
“Rebel Ridge” is now available on Netflix worldwide.
