Making an appearance on British talk show “This Morning” this week, Sir Ian McKellen was asked yet again if he would be returning to the upcoming “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”.

Word broke in early 2023 that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line were set to develop more live-action movies based on the property.

Then, in May, came news of a deal done with Embracer Group AB to develop new films with WBD, confirming the first of these will be “The Hunt for Gollum” which is aiming to release in 2026.

The other day McKellen confirmed that he would like to return. but in this new interview he added a little something extra:

“There’ll be a script arriving sometime in the new year, and I’ll judge whether I want to go back [laughs]. I would. I would love to go back to New Zealand, number one. And also, I don’t like the idea of anyone else playing Gandalf.

I’m told it’s two films. I probably shouldn’t be saying that [laughs]. But I haven’t read the script. So, I don’t know if it is.”

That more than one film being in development is old news, but ‘Gollum’ potentially being a two-parter is new. It comes as little surprise after what happened with “The Hobbit”.

Andy Serkis is directing the films with Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens producing and heavily involved.
