Acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan (“Midnight Mass,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Haunting of Hill House”) has been attached to an ambitious new adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” for a while now.
The project would mark his fourth go at translating a King work to screen following his film adaptations of “Gerald’s Game,” “Doctor Sleep” and the upcoming “The Life of Chuck”.
A year ago he offered an update, saying development of the project had stalled due to the writer’s strike but he felt they were in a good place and then once it was over – it would be “priority #1” for him.
Cut to this month and Flanagan, speaking with THR, says he’s still aiming big. Asked if it would be a TV series or a movie, he says:
“That thing’s launching an oil tanker. But we’re working on. It was stalled first by me moving from Netflix to Amazon and stalled again by the strikes. It’s progressing, and we’re further along than we’ve ever been on it. I do see feature components to some of the other stories, but the main storyline is ongoing series.”
In other words, a TV series for the main story, and potential films for events outside that – possibly the fourth book which is mostly a prequel.
Flanagan is currently busy prepping to film a new “The Exorcist” film at Universal and Blumhouse which is aiming for a 2026 release, and he has an untitled Amazon Prime series in the works as well.
