By The 81st Venice Film Festival has come to an end with Pedro Almodovar’s euthanasia-themed “The Room Next Door,” starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, taking the Golden Lion top prize.
Despite all the headlines about standing ovations, many of the films have ultimately had only mixed/softly positive review scores on critical aggregate sites following their Venice screenings.
‘Room’ is one of the few that is genuinely getting a lot of positive reviews with a 93% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, though its rather ordinary 6.9/10 average rating suggests it’s not a beloved work.
The runner-up Silver Lion prize went to Maura Delpero’s “Vermiglio,” while Brady Corbet scored best director for his 3.5-hour period drama “The Brutalist”.
Best Actress went to Nicole Kidman for the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the actress having to miss the ceremony as she raced back home following the sudden death of her mother. Best Actor went to Vincent Lindon for “The Quiet Son”. Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” won Best Screenplay.
A Special Jury Prize went to “April” by Dea Kulumbegashvili, while the Best New Actor award went to Paul Kircher for his work in “And Their Children After Them”.
Bogdan Muresanu’s “The New Year That Never Came” won the best film award in the Horizons section.
