Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” grossed a very promising $13 million in previews at the North American box office, and is set for $25 million on Friday for an opening day of $38-40 million.
For now no-one is quite sure where the film will land domestically by the end of the weekend with Warners erring on the side of caution.
Estimates are as low as $90 million and as high as $120 milion with these numbers suggesting around $100 million.
The preview haul is the second-biggest September preview number of all time, behind only “IT” which snagged $13.5 million ahead of a $123 million opening – still the record holder for the month.
The “Beetlejuice” sequel however is likely to overtake second place holder “IT: Part Two” with $91.1 million, and third place holder “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” with $75.4 million.
The original Beetlejuice grossed $74 million at the box office, which works out to $195 million when adjusted for inflation.
Second place will go to Disney/Marvel’s seventh weekend of “Deadpool & Wolverine” which will take in $6.7 million for the weekend is now at $613.5 million total domestically. “Reagan” will be third with $4.7 million, “Alien: Romulus” fourth with $4 million, and “It Ends with Us” fifth with $3.7 million.
