Will Smith has exited his co-starring role in the $80 million-budgeted action feature “Sugar Bandits”.

Smith and his Westbrook production company will remain producers on the big-budget project which was due to begin filming in coming months.

Production however had stalled due to uncertainty over Smith’s on-screen commitment and now he’s officially exiting as an actor due to scheduling conflicts.

Said conflict is expected to be a project being fast-tracked for the actor, but what project isn’t quite clear. Westbrook is seeking to re-cast Smith’s role and to film “Sugar Bandits” next year.

However the film was sold on Smith’s involvement to both indie distributors and Amazon Prime, and without his starring in it – it’s not certain if the project will go forward.

Smith was to play a former special forces soldier who runs an elite vigilante squad working to wipe out the drug trade in Boston. Stefano Sollima (“Without Remorse,” “Sicario: Day of the Soldado”) has been slated to direct.

The film is an adaptation of “The Town” author Chuck Hogan’s “Devils In Exile”. Pre-production was underway in Montreal with offers going out to other actors before today’s news.
