In an unexpected move, the filmmakers of the ‘young Donald Trump’ film “The Apprentice” are asking for money to bolster the theatrical release of the Sebastian Stan-led biopic.
The filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter called ‘Release the Apprentice’ which aims to “keep the film in as many theaters for as long as possible”.
The crowdfunding campaign features rewards ranging from a streaming copy to a nae listing in the credits and even one of the toupees worn by Stan on-screen.
Briarcliff Entertainment landed the U.S. rights to the 1970s-set film which struggled to find a buyer. It centers on the former president’s relationship with cutthroat New York City prosecutor Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong).
The film has been embroiled in controversy, including a scene in which Trump rapes his then wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova).
Trump himself has criticized “The Apprentice” and his campaign has threatened legal action. The Ali Abbasi-directed film opens October 11th, check out the first clip released from the film below.
