By Oscar-winning director David Fincher has reportedly been tapped to direct the Western crime thriller “Bitterroot” at Netflix according to What’s on Netflix.
Michael Gilio (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”) penned the script that made the 2008 Black List under the name “Big Hole”.
The story concerns an elderly rancher whose life savings have been stolen. He sets out to get his money back by robbing banks and hunting down the thieves – all while being pursued by his son – the sheriff.
Tone wise the project is said to be in the vein of the Clint Eastwood classic “Unforgiven”. Over a decade ago, the plan was for Gilio to both write and direct while Gore Verbinski would produce – but that incarnation never took off.
The outlet adds that offers have been made to two leads for the movie which suggests it’s Fincher’s next project to begin production.
Fincher has been linked with several upcoming projects including a U.S. film remake of “Squid Game,” a new take on Patricia Highsmith’s “Strangers on a Train” and an untitled crime thriller in early development.
