Sony PlayStation had a gargantuan hit earlier this year with “Helldivers 2,” one of the few multiplayer-only games of recent times to really break through.
History didn’t repeat with “Concord,” a PVP multiplayer-only, live-service sci-fi FPS from British developer Firesprite Games that has reportedly been in the works for eight years.
The game was released simultaneously on PS5 and PC to maximise sales and player counts at launch. The result has been nothing short of abysmal.
In its first week, Concord’s peak player count on Steam was a mere 697 players. To put that in comparison, even high profile bombs like “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” “Redfall” and “Skull and Bones” achieved peaks of 13,456; 6,124 and 2,615 respectively.
A new report at IGN, citing analyst Simon Carless, claims the game has only sold around 10,000 copies on Steam, and just 15,000 on PlayStation.
Another analyst indicates in the U.S., the game is ranking 147th amonst PS5 daily active players across all titles – in other words in its first week of release, less than 0.2% of people playing PS5 are playing the title.
The game is currently sitting on a ‘Mixed’ reaction among Steam reviewers. Amongst critics it sits at a 62/100 for PS5 and 65/100 for PC on Metacritic, while user reviews for the platforms are 1.8 and 0.7 respectively.
User complaints are mostly about the price point, followed by the boring gameplay, lack of other players, dull characters, and a few trolls going on about pronoun choice within the game.
The failure comes as the single-player title “Black Myth: Wukong” has broken sales records, is increasing PS5 console sales, and is pushing for the release of the PS5 Pro, which is expected to be unveiled within the next few weeks ahead of a November release.
