It’s the Labor Day holiday weekend in the United States – the Summer box-office season’s last hurrah and a traditionally dead quiet time.
Unshockingly it’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” leading the pack for the holiday with $15.1 million for the traditional three-day and $19.4 million for the four-day. It also crossed the $600 million domestic mark.
Coming in second is “Alien: Romulus” which is taking $9.3 million for the three-day and $11.5 million for the four-day. “It Ends With Us” will be third with $7.4 million & $9.5 million.
Debuting in fourth is “Reagan,” the Dennis Quaid-led biopic about the former U.S. President that’s bombed with critics but been a hit with its target audience – – that’ll will have a debut weekend of $7.4 million for the three-day & $9.2 million for the four-day.
Rounding out the top five is “Twisters” with $7.2 million for the three-day and $8.8 million for the four-day. Faith-based “The Forge” and Zoe Kravitz’ “Blink Twice” slipped to sixth and seventh respectively in their second weekend but both held well with drops of just 30% & 36% respectively.
Blumhouse’s little promoted AI horror “Afraid” also debuted this weekend, the widely panned horror tale set to take in $3.7 million for the three-day and $4.4 million for the four-day.
The “Coraline” re-release continues to power on with a $3.2M & $4.3M haul for this weekend and a total of $30.6 million so far – making it one of the most successful re-releases in modern history.
Several markers were hit this weekend. “Inside Out 2” has overtaken “The Lion King” to be the ninth highest grossing film of all time worldwide. “Despicable Me 4” topped $900 million worldwide, and both “Alien: Romulus” and “It Ends with Us” are about to hit $300 million worldwide.
