Ali Abbasi’s young Donald Trump film “The Apprentice” has been officially acquired by Briarcliff Entertainment for a pre-election U.S. theatrical release with an October 11th date set reports THR.
The film made a big splash in Cannes where offshore territories were acquired quickly and a release expected to happen this Fall, during the presidential campaign in late September and October.
Written by Gabriel Sherman, Sebastian Stan stars as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor lawyer Roy Cohn in a film that traces the formative years of the former president. Maria Bakalova also stars as ex-wife Ivana Trump.
One complication was the film’s partial financier being Trump supporter and former Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder who has disparaged the film.
His interest in the film has been bought out by producer James Shani whose production company Rich Spirit will partner on the theatrical release.
“The Apprentice” will shortly begin appearing at some fall film festivals and is said to be pursuing a full-on awards campaign. Reviews overall for the film were quite positive.
