A report emerged at Puck News earlier today suggesting a new Batman video game was in the works at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
The report was mostly on the future of Warner Bros. Discovery properties and teased a major Looney Tunes relaunch targeting a 2028 start.
Thrown in the mix is a comment about the game which is to be set in the same universe as Reeves’ version of the character, but no further details were available. Even so, the report comes from an industry veteran with no reason to doubt its authenticity.
Now though, the game talk has been shot down now by DC Studios chief James Gunn who says on Threads that “sadly there is no truth to this whatsoever” when asked about a new game set in “The Batman” universe.
Gunn also amusingly added: “There is also no truth to Tubthumping by Chumbawamba being played on the set of Superman (this is a real rumor on Reddit someone just sent me)”.
The comments come after a rough time for DC when it comes to video games. Rocksteady’s lauded single-player “Batman: Arkham” trilogy defined superhero games in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
Since then, a shift to more co-op and service game titles like “Gotham Knights” and “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” has been met with poor critical/audience reception and sales. It’s hoped Monolith Productions’ new single-player open world “Wonder Woman” title can reverse the trend.
