By Box-office projections for Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to his iconic 1988 supernatural dark comedy, keep going up.
National Research Group (NRG) originally reported at the start of the month that the film was headed for a $65-75 million opening. Two weeks ago, those estimates were revised upwards to $80 million.
Today comes the news that the estimates have jumped again and are now sitting at $105 million or more. If true that will make it the third biggest domestic box-office opening weekend of the year – behind only “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2”.
The film just held its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and so far the reception seems to be quite good with many calling it a return to form for Burton who himself has spoken about how this film has revitalised him creatively.
Burton hasn’t opened a film higher than $50 million since 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland,” but there’s a lot of interest in this. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara return from the original film and are joined by the likes of Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci this time out.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” opens in cinemas on September 6th.
