By The Edgar Wright-directed and Glen Powell-led new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “The Running Man” is progressing well with a new report at The Wrap indicating that filming is set to begin in November.
Powell is reportedly juggling production on the film in the UK with finishing his degree at the University of Texas – which will involve a lot of Zoom and distance learning along with him having to head back two or three times a semester for proctored exams.
The movie is set in an America under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses. One desperate man, needing money for his sick daughter, joins the most popular show in which teams of killers hunt down contestants.
The “Anyone But You,” “Twisters” and “Hit Man” actor is everywhere right now, so much so he’s being seen as a box-office draw and one of a new generation of young stars like Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Tom Holland who can pull in audiences.
One unnamed producer tells the outlet Powell is a movie star “in the sense that audiences now go to movies to see him”. They then add: “Unlike an actor like Ryan Gosling whose appeal is mostly limited to female audiences, Glen appeals to both females and males.”
Asked about that assessment, Powell just humbly says: “Gosling is a legend. I’m just Glen.” Powell is currently in production on the Hulu series “Chad Powers” and will segue from that into “The Running Man”.
