Back at the end of 2022 came word that actress/director Bryce Dallas Howard will lead the cast of a Disney+ TV pilot based on the family-oriented “Witch Mountain” franchise.
The show was to be a modern take on the franchise, following two teens who develop strange abilities and discover that their sleepy suburb may not be as idyllic as it seems.
Things had progressed enough that a supporting cast including Isabel Gravitt, Levi Miller, Jackson Kelly, and Bianca ‘B’ Norwood as series regulars, while Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas (“Star Trek: Picard,” “12 Monkeys”) co-wrote the pilot and were to executive produce.
Cut to almost two years later without much of a peep about it, Howard herself has now confirmed to Collider, at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, that the revival is dead on the Disney+ service and won’t go past the already shot pilot episode:
“It’s not happening, which is disappointing. It was a really great groove, and we really all enjoyed shooting it here in Toronto. Some things make it, and some things don’t, and that’s the unfortunate truth of this industry.”
“Escape to Witch Mountain” was released in 1975, based on the 1968 book of the same name. Sequels followed in 1978 and 1982, whilst Dwayne Johnson led a 2009 film reboot.
