Reviews for the new take on “The Crow” were held until the films release on Friday, and the results haven’t been great.
At present, the movie sits at just 20% (4.3/10) on Rotten Tomatoes which is considerably better than the single-digit figures it began with when reviews started coming in.
Even so, that’s one of the worst showings for a film involving a superhero (sort of). This is matched by the film’s CinemaScore which is a B- grade, on par with the likes of “Dark Phoenix,” the 2019 “Hellboy” reboot and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”.
For the most part, the film has faced negative backlash ever since it was announced and throughout its struggles to get into production. Talking to EW about the backlash, director Rupert Sanders offered a response that essentially tells the haters and sceptics to ‘go outside and touch grass’:
“I think a lot of people are very active online and not so active in life. Get out and do something and have less time throwing stones.
I think it would be great just for people to know that this is a reimagining and wildly different from the original and that the original’s still there. I haven’t recorded over anyone’s VHS.
You can still go and see that movie, and I hope this movie resonates with people who loved that movie when they were in their teens. This is my version of that text. It was my adaptation of James’s graphic novel, which I loved.”
Either way, the $50 million budget film is not doing well with box office estimates coming in below expectations and sitting anywhere between $4-6 million by weekend’s end.
