Tom Cruise is pretty much the King of Hollywood at this point. The famous bringer of nothing but A-game, and serial refused to just phone it in, still lacks one thing though… an Oscar.
He has come tantalizingly close, nominated for Born On The Fourth Of July, Magnolia, and Jerry Maguire. There was also a Best Picture nomination for Top Gun: Maverick. The win was just out of reach each time.
His next project seems almost laser-crafted, machine-tooled within fine tolerances to try and break that duck. The new project at Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment is absolutely loaded with Oscar-bait talent.
Alejandro González Iñárritu
It is co-written and directed by four-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñàrritu. The cast alongside Cruise has started to build. It will include Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Emmy winner John Goodman, Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons, and Primetime Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg. Also joining them is Talk to Me breakout Sophie Wilde.
Oscar winner Riz Ahmed is also in final negotiations to join the cast according to a report in Deadline.
Co-writers alongside Iñàrritu are Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone. It tells the story of the most powerful man in the world who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.
As Mission: Impossible comes to a close, and the relentless march of time draws a line in the sand eventually around more Top Gun, Cruise is not going to slow down, just switch focus.
Scooper DanielRPK reports that Cruise may also appear in Doug Liman’s Deeper directly after that project. The Max Landis written script is described as Gravity meets The Martian via The Abyss and follows a disgraced astronaut on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench. He finds himself confronted by a sinister force.
