Though Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” included many cameos from past Marvel stars, one figure that didn’t make it was Thomas Jane’s take on Frank Castle/The Punisher.
The “Deep Blue Sea” and “The Expanse” actor took on the role in 2004 for one film which scored negative reviews and underwhelmed at the box-office. Four years later Ray Stevenson took on the role in “Punisher: War Zone” which similarly bombed with critics and audiences.
It wasn’t until Jon Bernthal took on the role for Marvel’s Netflix shows that the character seemed to enjoy success again. Still, Jane’s name was rumored at one point as a potential candidate to appear in “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
Asked this week by The Direct if the idea had been floated by him, he tells the outlet:
“Nope. I like [Jon] Bernthal’s Punisher. I think, you know, for me, it was always a little bit of a stretch. Frank Castle is supposed to be an Italian American. I’m not. I’m an Irish American. So for me, I had to dye the hair and sort of take on a persona, but Bernthal wears it so well, so I think they should stick with him.”
Then asked if he would be up for playing a villain opposite Bernthal’s Punisher one day, he responded: “Hey, that wouldn’t be bad. I like that.”
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will return in “Daredevil: Born Again” in March 2025.
