Art begets art indeed. “Alien: Romulus” filmmaker Fede Alvarez has revealed that his film and the celebrated “The Last of Us” franchise has a key link all tied to actress Isabela Merced and her roles.
The live-action “Dora” and “Madame Web” star has supporting roles as the pregnant Kay in “Alien: Romulus” and as Dina in the upcoming second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” game-to-series adaptation.
That second season is to be based on part of “The Last of Us Part II” video game. In a new posting on social media, Alvarez has revealed he was playing that game while writing ‘Romulus’ and Dina’s pregnancy storyline in the game inspired him to make Kay pregnant in ‘Romulus’.
He cast Merced as Kay which she filmed during the second quarter of 2023. Then in January this year came the news that Merced had been cast in the Dina role in “The Last of Us” series.
The reveal comes after Alvarez found himself temporarily banned from an “Alien” subreddit for ‘impersonating’ himself whilst answering fan spoiler questions about ‘Romulus’ – such as who is the ‘jerk’ of a father of Kay’s baby (for the record, it was Spike Fearn’s Bjorn).
“Alien: Romulus” is in cinemas now. “The Last of Us” Season 2 is due to hit HBO in 2025.
Fun fact: I was playing #TheLastOfUs2 while writing #AlienRomulus The story of a pregnant Dina made me think of having the character of Kay be pregnant too. Then I cast Isabella Merced to play Kay…. A year later she gets cast to play Dina on the HBO show…. True story. https://t.co/fABV9L1x1I pic.twitter.com/prDV6bHTYf
