“Squid Game” actor Lee Jung-jae, one of the few stars to likely come out of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” unscathed, says he was surprised by the show’s cancellation.
The series spanned eight episodes and featured the most diverse cast yet for a “Star Wars” show, along with being set in the previously unexplored on-screen High Republic era.
It also proved incredibly divisive amongst the fanbase. Then earlier this week came the news that the show was officially cancelled with no plans for a second season.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The actor, who played Master Sol in the series throughout its run, spoke with EW in the wake of the news and shared his thoughts about it:
“As you know, my character had died already in the first season. So I wouldn’t have appeared in the second season if there was one anyway. But personally speaking, I really loved Leslye’s writing.
I thought that she was a great writer and director who was very talented in the storytelling, as well as creating characters and creating meaningful structures within the story. So I was actually personally really looking forward to watching a season 2 with her at the helm. To hear the news, I was quite surprised personally as well.”
Lee adds he still holds out hope for something more from the story in the future:
“Honestly, I am hoping that maybe there could be changes in the future, because you never know what’s going to happen. So on a personal level, I really hope we could get to see further stories of Leslye’s second season.”
The series was also back in the news again this week when people noticed “The Acolyte” merchandise had been pulled from the official “Star Wars” store – though did return shortly after.
