Screenwriter Tasha Huo (“Red Sonja,” “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft”) says the live-action film based on the “Naruto” manga and anime franchise is gearing up.
The franchise follows a spiky blond-haired orphan warrior ousted from his community because he harbours a demonic entity in his body.
Speaking with EW, Huo confirms that her “script is done” on the project which will mark the first live-action big-screen outing for the franchise.
She adds that the film’s new writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi”) is “now doing his stuff” with the story. Speaking about his selection to direct the film, she says he’s a great choice:
“I think he’s going to be able to capture how nuanced and special Naruto is without getting distracted by the big world that it is, which I think could easily be done by someone who’s not a fan or someone who’s coming in for a cash payday. This is definitely a movie that comes at it from a love of who Naruto is and that character and his relationships.”
The comments follow similar sentiments from franchise creator Masashi Kishimoto who told the outlet a while back that he met Cretton and found him to be an “open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process”.
The “Naruto” live-action film has yet to set a release date.
