Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” is again expected to win the box office this weekend following it’s strong debut last Friday.
Considering the film cost an economical $80 million, and was once destined for streaming before Disney changed course and went with a theatrical release, so far it is doing commendably.
Speaking with THR recently, Álvarez was asked if he has ideas for a potential sequel and would he able to pitch one tomorrow if needs be. He says:
“Yes, I definitely can… Once we finished, we started thinking, “What do you think happens when or if they get to your Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?”
We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, ‘Oh, that sounds like a sequel.’
But we really try to think about it more in terms of story and if it needs another chapter and whether people want to know what happens next. So we’ll wait to see what people think and if people ask for it… But we definitely have ideas about where it should go”
He adds that his approach to any sequel is to wait at least two years to build audience hunger for it. He also says there was some pushback from the studio regarding the film’s contentious final act.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “ALIEN: ROMULUS” ENDING
Specifically, he is referring to the hybrid creature which has been dubbed ‘The Offspring’ and has drawn comparisons to ‘The Newborn’ from the finale of the 1997 film “Alien: Resurrection” – namely in being a more ‘humanised’ xenomorph. Alvarez says:
“They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, ‘Is it too much? Do we really have to go there?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, now that you said that we shouldn’t, I know that I will.’ So that’s exactly what we did here.
If you’re given an Alien movie by a corporation that is owned by Disney and they immediately say, ‘Yeah, let’s make it,’ then you are failing somehow. So we really pushed it to the limit, and I’m glad we did.”
“Alien: Romulus” is now playing in cinemas worldwide.
