The video game “Black Myth: Wukong” has only been out for twelve hours, and yet it has already become the second most concurrently played game in Steam history.
Developed by Shenzen-based studio Game Science, and based on legendary 16th century Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” the title was released for PC and PS5 on Tuesday.
On Steam, the title has already hit a peak player count of 2.22 million players – behind only “PUBG: Battlegrounds” at 3.26 million which currently holds the record.
“Palworld” is third with 2.10 million players, but either way ‘Wukong’ is the most-played single-player game ever on the PC game service – easily surpassing “Cyberpunk 2077” and “Elden Ring” down at around the 1 million mark each.
The game has scored a very solid 82/100 on Metacritic so far. The monster launch is a surprise, and some will quickly say it’s due to the Chinese market which has been anticipating the title.
However WeGame is the service where ‘Wukong’ is sold in China, not Steam. The count also doesn’t include the PlayStation 5 version, while an Xbox version was in development but has been delayed.
It also comes as the game’s developer Game Science was asked to justify a document it allegedly issued to influencers and content creators saying their coverage can’t include COVID-19, “politics” or “feminist propaganda” references.
