Kalinda Vazquez (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and Robbie Thompson (“Supernatural”) have signed on to serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers on the new “Poltergeist” TV series at Amazon MGM Studios.
This series interpretation of the iconic 1982 horror feature was announced back in October last year and marks the latest attempt by Amazon to adapt MGM’s biggest legacy IP works for the modern age.
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is producing the series, with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey attached as executive producers. Spielberg himself was a big component of the original film’s success – co-writing the screenplay, and producing the film.
The original film follows the Freeling family who move into a new home only to discover that it is infested with ghosts. After the ghosts kidnap their young daughter, the Freelings work with a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium to free her.
The film was a big success upon release, grossing approximately $121 million worldwide against a reported budget of $10.7 million. It was followed up by two not well-regarded sequels, and a poorly received 2015 reboot.
This would mark the second “Poltergeist” series following the late 1990s show “Poltergeist: The Legacy” which aired across Showtime and the Sci-Fi Channel.
